Ollama packages running an open-source LLM locally into a single command — ollama run llama3 downloads and starts the model, with a local REST API and Python client for calling it from code afterward. No cloud API key, no per-token cost, and your data never leaves the machine.

The trade-off is hardware: local models are constrained by your own GPU/RAM rather than a cloud provider’s infrastructure, so it’s a better fit for development, privacy-sensitive use cases, or smaller models than for production workloads needing the largest available models.
