Flake8 is a wrapper around three tools: PyFlakes (logical errors), pycodestyle (style against PEP 8) and Ned Batchelder’s McCabe complexity script. You run one command, flake8, and get a single merged report per file. It adds # noqa comments for silencing a warning on a line, Git and Mercurial hooks, and an entry-point system that has produced a large ecosystem of plugins.

It reads its settings from setup.cfg, tox.ini or .flake8. It has been the default Python linter for years, and Ruff now reimplements its rules and many of its popular plugins natively, which is why many projects have moved over.

See Ruff vs Pylint vs Flake8 for how the three compare.
