CircuitPython plugs into a computer over USB and appears as a mass-storage drive — save code.py to it and the board restarts and runs your code automatically, with no compiler, upload step, or serial setup required. It’s Adafruit’s fork of MicroPython, built specifically for beginner experience and backed by Adafruit’s own extensive driver library for sensors, displays, and other peripherals.

The trade-off for that simplicity is deliberate: CircuitPython doesn’t support interrupts, and is generally a step behind MicroPython on raw execution speed. CircuitPython Turbo (2026) narrows that gap for specific hot functions on RP2040/RP2350 boards by compiling them to native code while the rest of the program stays interpreted. See CircuitPython vs MicroPython for the full comparison.
